The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet is a popular choice among homeowners for its water efficiency, sleek design, and reliable performance.

However, like any household fixture, it can develop problems over time that may require troubleshooting or professional intervention.

This article aims to explore some of the common issues users of the American Standard Cadet 3 may face and provide practical guidance on how to resolve these concerns.

Overview of American Standard Cadet 3

The American Standard Cadet 3 is a popular toilet choice for many homeowners seeking both functional and beautiful bathroom design ideas. This toilet features a sleek and smooth vitreous china construction, ensuring easy cleaning and a lustrous appearance.

The Cadet 3 has an elongated bowl, providing extra comfort for users. Additionally, the bowl shape proves beneficial for people with mobility issues. The toilet’s design not only caters to comfort but also water efficiency.

It boasts a low 1.28 gallons per flush, significantly reducing water consumption and utility bills compared to older models with higher gallon-per-flush rates.

An essential aspect of the American Standard Cadet 3 is its combination of style and functionality. Its design complements a variety of bathroom décors and proves to be a reliable option for homeowners. The toilet balances aesthetics and performance, making it a prominent choice in the marketplace.

Key Features

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet offers a variety of features that make it a popular choice among homeowners. With its Comfort Height design, the toilet is at a comfortable height for most users, making it easier for seniors and those with mobility issues to use comfortably.

This toilet is also WaterSense certified, meaning it is designed for water efficiency, helping you save on your water bill while maintaining a high-performance flush. The Cadet 3 employs Flowise technology, providing a powerful yet efficient flush that uses 1.28 gallons of water per flush, meeting the EPA WaterSense specifications.

The EverClean surface is an innovative feature of the Cadet 3 that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew, ensuring a cleaner and more hygienic experience.

This surface also makes cleaning the toilet easier and keeps the toilet looking new for a longer time.

The trapway is an essential feature in the Cadet 3, designed to minimize clogs and provide a smooth, uninterrupted flow of waste through the toilet. The larger trapway size allows for better waste passage and less chance of clogs.

One of the convenient features of the American Standard Cadet 3 is the detachable seat, making it easy to remove and clean. This seat also allows for simple installation and replacement if needed.

Installation and Setup

To begin the installation process of the American Standard Cadet 3, gather the necessary tools for the project. These tools may include a wrench, a level, a measuring tape, a hacksaw, and a drill.

First, inspect the existing plumbing connections in your bathroom to ensure there are no leaks or other issues. Turn off the water supply using the shut-off valve before proceeding.

Next, measure the distance between the wall and the center of the floor drain hole, which is called the toilet flange, to ensure a proper fit for the Cadet 3 toilet. The standard distance is 12 inches; however, it is crucial to verify this before moving forward.

Once measurements are confirmed, attach the floor bolts to the toilet flange, ensuring they are level and secure. Apply a new wax ring to the flange to create a watertight seal between the toilet and the drainpipe.

Now, carefully lower the toilet bowl onto the wax ring and align it with the floor bolts. Press down firmly to compress the wax ring and ensure an even seal. Next, tighten the nuts onto the bolts to secure the bowl in place.

Be cautious not to over-tighten the nuts, as this may lead to bowl cracks or damage.

Once the bowl is securely in place, attach the tank to the bowl following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Make sure to align the mounting holes properly and use a level to ensure the tank is straight. Tighten the nuts cautiously to create a watertight seal between the tank and the bowl.

Finally, reconnect the water supply line to the fill valve located at the base of the tank. Turn on the water supply and observe the toilet for any leaks around the seals. Examine the fill valve as well, adjusting it if necessary to attain the proper water level in the tank.

Once the toilet functions correctly and no leaks are detected, attach the toilet seat according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. With the seat in place, the installation of the American Standard Cadet 3 is complete and ready for use.

Flushing System

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet features a powerful flushing system that provides efficient and effective waste removal utilizing a flush valve. This system operates using a single flush mechanism, ensuring water-saving benefits in every use.

One common problem with the Cadet 3’s flushing system is a weak or partial flush. This can be caused by issues with the flush valve, which may require cleaning or replacement.

To address this concern, check the flush valve for any blockage or damage. If necessary, replace it with a genuine American Standard flush valve to maintain optimal performance.

Another potential problem is a slow-filling toilet tank. This may be due to a faulty fill valve, which is responsible for refilling the tank after each flush. To rectify this issue, inspect the fill valve for any signs of wear and tear, and replace it if needed.

In some cases, users may experience the toilet running continuously after flushing. This issue could be attributed to a misadjusted or damaged flapper, resulting in water leakage from the tank to the bowl.

You can resolve this by adjusting or replacing the flapper, ensuring a proper seal, and preventing unnecessary water waste.

Maintenance and Cleaning

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet is designed with user convenience in mind, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Its smooth EverClean surface inhibits the growth of stains and odor-causing bacteria, ensuring that your toilet stays cleaner for longer periods.

Regular cleaning of the toilet is essential to maintain its pristine appearance. Use a mild soap and water solution along with a soft cloth or sponge to gently wipe the bowl and tank’s exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, brushes or pads that could scratch the surface, as this may damage the EverClean coat.

The soft-close seat feature of the Cadet 3 reduces the risk of damage due to accidental slamming, thus prolonging the life of the seat.

To clean the seat, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Make sure to clean the hinges and the area beneath the seat to prevent any buildup of dirt and grime.

In case of clogs, it is advised to use a plunger. Place it over the drain hole and apply gentle pressure, allowing it to suction out the blockage. Avoid using chemical drain cleaners, as they may damage the toilet’s internal components.

Common Problems and Solutions

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet is a popular choice for homeowners due to its efficiency and durability. However, like any other toilet, it may occasionally experience some problems.

Clogs: A common issue that may arise is clogging. To fix this, use a plunger to apply pressure and dislodge the clog.

Be sure to use a toilet plunger, not a sink plunger, for optimal results. If the clog persists, a toilet auger can be used for more stubborn blockages.

Leaks: Leaks can occur in various parts of the toilet, including the base and the tank. To fix a leak at the base, tighten the bolts that secure the toilet to the floor, making sure not to overtighten. For leaks in the tank, check the flapper for damage or wear. If needed, replace the flapper with a compatible one.

Additionally, ensure the water level in the tank is not too high, as this can cause water to leak into the overflow tube.

Flush Valve Issues: If the toilet is not flushing properly, the flush valve might be the problem. Inspect the flush valve for damage or debris that may be obstructing the flow of water.

A faulty fill valve, indicated by a constant flow of water into the tank, may also require replacement.

To maintain the performance of your American Standard Cadet 3 toilet, regularly clean the bowl and tank, inspect components for wear, and replace parts as needed. It’s also essential to use septic-safe toilet paper and avoid flushing inappropriate items, such as wipes, to prevent clogs.

By addressing these issues as they arise and performing routine maintenance, you can ensure the longevity and efficiency of your Cadet 3 toilet.

Reviews and Customer Feedback

Many customers praise the efficiency of the Cadet 3’s flushing system, stating that it uses minimal water while still providing a thorough and powerful flush.

The toilet’s EverClean surface also garners positive feedback as it contributes to a cleaner bowl and reduced need for frequent cleaning.

However, some customers have raised questions and concerns regarding a few potential issues.

A small number of users have reported difficulty in finding replacement parts for the Cadet 3, particularly for the flush valve and fill valve. It is essential to address these concerns by directing customers to certified retailers that carry genuine American Standard replacement parts to ensure compatibility and proper functioning.

Another issue occasionally mentioned in the reviews involves the slow-filling of the toilet tank. While this may not be a widespread problem, it is essential for customers to consult the installation manual or seek professional assistance when necessary, to ensure proper installation and avoid any issues with the toilet’s performance.

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet is available in various configurations and styles, which can influence the overall price. Generally, the price range for the Cadet 3 series falls between $200 to $600, depending on the chosen features and design.

Online retailers such as Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s offer a wide selection to cater to different preferences. It can also be purchased directly from the American Standard website. Compliance and Certifications

The American Standard Cadet 3 toilet series offers a variety of models that cater to different compliance standards and certifications. One of the key aspects is its ADA-compliant design.

These models are designed with comfort in mind, featuring a higher bowl height that conforms to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, making them accessible for users of all abilities.

In addition to ADA compliance, the Cadet 3 series also includes models that are WaterSense certified. The WaterSense program, backed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ensures that these toilets use at least 20% less water than standard models without sacrificing performance.

This certification helps the consumers save water and reduce the strain on environmental resources.

To ensure consistent quality and adherence to regulations, the Cadet 3 toilets have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. This process includes various tests that measure flush performance, bowl cleaning capabilities, and water efficiency.

Through these tests, the Cadet 3 series strives to meet or exceed the minimum requirements set by the relevant compliance and certification bodies.

  1. American Standard has just sent a replacement for the Cadet 3 that we bought last year. It has exactly the same problem as the first one: After flushing, the bowl fills and then water slowly leaks out until the water surface is only about 6 inches by 7 inches, not the 8 x 10 that is in the specifications.
