Every winter, temperatures drop low enough to turn household plumbing into a ticking time bomb.
Frozen pipes are one of the most destructive and expensive disasters a homeowner can face.
When water freezes, it expands with incredible force—enough to split copper pipes and burst PVC lines wide open.
The worst part isn’t always the freeze itself; it’s the thaw. You often don’t realize the damage has been done until the ice melts and water starts flooding your walls and ceilings.
Prevention is always cheaper than repair.
We created the WinterGuard Interactive System below to serve as your personal winter command center.
Whether you are preparing for a forecasted cold snap, or you are worried a pipe might already be frozen, use this tool to navigate the situation safely.
How to use this tool:
- Prevention Mode: Click the rooms in the “Prevention Guide” to see exactly what to check in your attic, basement, and outdoor areas.
- Diagnostic Wizard: If you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out, use the “Identify Issues” tab to figure out if it’s frozen or just a localized issue.
- Emergency: If you discover a leak, hit the red “Emergency” button for a step-by-step guide to stopping the water immediately.
What to Do If You Can’t Fix It Yourself
While this guide covers the essentials of prevention and immediate identification, some situations require a licensed professional.
Important Safety Warning: Never attempt to thaw a pipe with an open flame, such as a blowtorch or propane heater. This is a major fire hazard and often causes more damage to the pipe. If you cannot locate the frozen section, or if the frozen area is inside a wall you cannot access, stop what you are doing.
Be Prepared Before the Emergency: If you have used the tool above and determined you have a burst pipe or a deep freeze you can’t reach:
- Shut off your main water valve immediately (as shown in the Emergency tab above).
- Contact a licensed local plumber. We recommend finding a reputable plumber with 24-hour emergency service reviews before the storm hits. Keep their number saved in your phone so you aren’t searching during a crisis.
